Many people who aren't particularly familiar with the steel industry do not realise that there are actually multiple types of steel that are used for different types of projects. When steel is used for construction, for example, there are three very commonly used types of steel: carbon steel, galvanised steel and alloy steel. Carbon steel is made from iron and carbon; the amount of carbon that is used impacts just how malleable the steel is. Galvanised steel is steel that is coated in zinc; the purpose of this is to prevent corrosion from being an issue. Alloy steel is perhaps the most durable, tough and rigid type of steel and is commonly used for very heavy applications. Lots of Different Equipment and Processes Are Used

The average steelworking shop typically has a lot of equipment that technicians use when working with steel. Band saws, grinding machines, shears, snips, torches and more are used for cutting. Lathe machines, milling machines, planers, shapers and drilling machines are all used to get things done with steel, too. A Lot of Training Is Required

The people who work with steel typically undergo a lot of training and practice before they become good at their jobs. Steelworking is, by its very nature, quite dangerous, so workers typically go through safety training. In addition to learning how to use different equipment, many employees have to become certified to operate cranes or welding machines.
